Biography
Julie Davies, soprano, praised for her “colorfully focused and powerful sound” and facility of “glimmering coloratura,” enjoys an active stage career, performing with international orchestras and opera companies. She has been featured in Darmstadt’s new productions of Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffman (all four ladies) where she was acclaimed for having “demonstrated astounding flexibility,” Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci (Nedda), and Donizetti’s Don Pasquale (Norina) and Wagners Die Walküre (Gerhilde). Ms. Davies is specifically celebrated for her performances of the title roles in Lucia di Lammermoor and La Sonnambula. Last season, she performed the title roles in Darmstadt’s new productions of La Traviata and Suor Angelica, as well as Desdemona in Otello. She has appeared Opera de Paris as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and as the Young Maiden in Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron which she has also performed with Teatro Real in Madrid.
Other roles in her repertoire include: Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, First Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Corinna in Il viaggio à Reims, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Mother in Hansel and Gretel, and Rita Billingsley in William Bolcom’s A Wedding.
A frequent concert singer, some of Ms. Davies' credits include Verdi’s Requiem, Poulenc's Gloria, Stravinsky's Pulcinella, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Bernstein's Jeremiah, Mendelssohn's Elijah and Psalm 115, Handel's Messiah, Fauré's Requiem, Mozart's Vesperae de Confessore and Requiem and Beethoven's Choral Fantasia.
Ms. Davies has won several competitions: Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions, First in the Naftzger Young Artists Competition, and Finalist in the Marilyn Horne Foundation Competition. Ms. Davies has sung in master classes with Marilyn Horne, Martina Arroyo, Frederica von Stade, and Hörst Günter.
